designed rustic wood floors for a new luxury

"The Sanctuary" at Kiawah Island, SC.

Completed in 2004, this large commercial hotel/resort project had some interesting design features to solve. The architects of this new resort wanted it to have the ambience of the "old South". Part of that ambience was to have floors evocative of an old Southern mansion including floors worn by generations that creaked convincingly when walked upon.

We had a number of considerations that resulted in solutions using old world finishing techniques coupled with the latest flooring technology of the 21st century.

Many of the spaces were large such as the long hallway from one wing to the other; the expanse of the entrance and reception, the hallway and the spacious lounge, lounge bar and sitting room. In this environment with high humidity and heat out of doors coupled with the dry, chill air of the air conditioning, expansion and contraction were of concern if traditional solid wide plank were used. Working with the designers and installing contractor, we created an engineered floor with 3/8" walnut pressed to 3/8" substrate tongue 'n groove to reduce expansion/contraction to a minimum.

The creaking factor solution is ours to know and store with grandma's secret recipes.

These floors have gained a lot of attention. For more visit our Portfolio for Commercial and our Products for Wide Plank.
