| Patina Old World Floors captured the contract for creating the floors for the prestigious five star luxury resort on Kiawah Island called “The Sanctuary”. Opened to the public in the last year scant days after Hurricane Charley, this resort perched just above the tide line on the beach brings back memories of the grandeur of yesteryear in its style, comfort and opulence. And Patina was there to help. Quoting USA Today “ The first thing you notice are the floors. Painstakingly hand-planed to create the uneven look found in historic Southern mansions, the exquisite walnut planks in the lobby of the 8-month old Sanctuary at Kiawah Island ooze warmth and sophistication.” Part of the project brief was that the floors needed to “creak like old floors do in historic houses in the South.” And so they do. But unlike historic houses in the South, this nine and ten inch wide walnut plank was engineered using a 3/8” veneer pressed to a 3/8” plywood substrate which makes a more stable product in relation to the expansion/contraction factor. As lovely as the flooring in the cavernous lobby is, it also extends into the open plan lounge, the reading room, the lounge bar, along the endless hallways that lead left and right from the entrance. They wrap around the graceful sweeping southern belle staircases and up to the Jasmine Café on one side and up to the wing on the other. They also ascend the staircases themselves, whose risers are paved with the walnut as are the mezzanines at the top of both staircases. The walnut gives over to blond oak for both the Jasmine Café and the upstairs Spa giving cheerful blond warmth to those spaces even on dull, gray days when Atlantic fronts move in.
